Description
Mount Ararat rises from the forests of Northeastern Ontario as one of the region's more distinctive hiking destinations. While it shares its name with the famous peak in Turkey, this Ontario mountain has its own quiet identity — dense boreal forest, open summit views, and the kind of wilderness stillness that makes you want to slow down and pay attention.
The landscape here reflects both deep geological history and more recent human activity. Lower elevations show signs of past logging, with recovering clearcuts giving way to mixed forest as you climb. That transition creates real variety across the hike — open patches where wildflowers take over in summer, then gradually denser stands of mature trees as the trail gains elevation.
On the Trail
The trail at Mount Ararat is rated easy, which makes it a solid choice for families, newer hikers, or anyone looking for a low-pressure day out in the woods. The route is well-marked throughout, so you can spend your energy on the forest around you rather than on navigation. Trail markers appear consistently, and the main path follows a sensible line up the mountain that avoids the most technical terrain while still giving you a genuine sense of climbing.
The lower section moves through mixed forest — birch and poplar overhead, a varied understory below. As you gain elevation, the forest shifts toward the spruce and fir that define Ontario's boreal zone. It's a gradual change, but one you'll notice if you're paying attention: the light filters differently, the air feels cooler, and the forest floor transitions from ferns and wildflowers to a thick carpet of moss. That boreal quiet, broken only by wind in the canopy and birds calling from somewhere deeper in the trees, is one of the things that makes this kind of hike worth doing.
The tree cover is dense through most of the ascent, which keeps things cool on hot summer days but also means the trail can hold moisture after rain. Good footwear with some grip is worth wearing regardless of the season.
The Summit
Breaking out of the forest at the top of Mount Ararat gives you a genuine payoff. The summit opens up into a panoramic view over Northeastern Ontario's boreal landscape — rolling forested hills in every direction, the occasional lake or wetland catching the light below. It's the kind of view that puts the scale of this region into perspective. The forest just keeps going.
The open character of the summit makes it a different environment from the enclosed trail below. There's more wind up here, more sky, and a sense of exposure that contrasts nicely with the sheltered feeling of the forest. It's a good spot to stop, eat something, and take in what you climbed through to get here.
Wildlife
Mount Ararat sits within a functioning boreal ecosystem, and the wildlife reflects that. Deer move through the woods quietly and often appear along the trail without much warning. Smaller mammals — chipmunks, squirrels — are a constant presence. The bird life is worth paying attention to: woodpeckers working through dead snags, warblers moving through the canopy, raptors occasionally visible from higher ground. Birdwatchers will find the variety here genuinely interesting, even if the forest means you're often hearing more than you're seeing.
Getting Ready
Mount Ararat is an easy hike, but Northeastern Ontario weather can shift quickly, and the forest environment tends to run cooler and more humid than open terrain. Layers are always a reasonable call, and the summit can be noticeably windier than the trail below. Bring enough water — the climb is modest, but you'll still work up a sweat — and pack something to eat so you can actually enjoy the summit rather than rushing back down.
The well-marked trail system means a map isn't strictly necessary, but carrying one helps you understand the layout of the mountain and adds context to what you're moving through. Sturdy footwear handles the potentially muddy or rocky sections without issue.
Mount Ararat works well as a standalone day hike or as part of a longer trip through Northeastern Ontario, where other outdoor opportunities are easy to combine with a morning or afternoon on this trail.
