Trail description

Description

Sentier Du Moulin is a close-to-the-city escape in the National Capital region of Quebec City, built for people who want real time in the woods without a long drive or complicated logistics. It’s the kind of place you can fit into a busy itinerary—easy to reach from downtown Quebec City—while still feeling like you’ve stepped into a quieter, greener pocket of nature.

What it’s like on the trail

The experience at Sentier Du Moulin is shaped by variety. You’re not committing to a single out-and-back route; instead, you’re stepping into a network of well-maintained trails that lets you choose how long and how intense you want your outing to be. That makes it a good match for everything from a quick leg-stretcher to a longer wander where you take your time exploring.

As you move through the area, expect a classic Quebec forest feel—lush woods with sections that open and close around you—plus the calming presence of streams along parts of the route. The sound of running water and the cooler air near the streamside sections can be especially welcome on warm days, while the forest canopy adds shade and a more sheltered feel.

Views are part of the draw here, too. The trails offer lookouts over the surrounding landscape, so you’ll get moments where the scenery opens up and you can pause for a photo or a snack. Bring your camera if you like capturing the mix of forest, water, and wider vistas—there are enough changes in scenery that it doesn’t feel repetitive.

Trail options for different hikers

One of the most practical things about Sentier Du Moulin is how it suits a wide range of experience levels. If you’re new to hiking, you can stick to routes that match your comfort level and focus on enjoying the forest and streamside sections. If you’re more experienced, the trail network gives you the flexibility to link sections together and keep the pace up for a more workout-focused outing.

Because the trails are described as well maintained, this is a place where you can spend less time worrying about navigation and more time paying attention to the surroundings—especially if you’re hiking with a mixed group where people may have different speeds and goals.

Nature highlights: forest, streams, wildlife, and flora

Sentier Du Moulin is a good choice when you want your hike to feel like a nature walk in the best sense: trees overhead, undergrowth and seasonal greenery along the trail, and the steady presence of local plant life throughout. The “lush forests” mentioned in the area description are a big part of the atmosphere—expect a greener, more enclosed feel for much of your walk, broken up by those scenic viewpoints.

Keep an eye out for local wildlife as you go. You may spot movement in the woods or hear birds and other animals before you see them, so it’s worth slowing down in quieter sections—especially near the streams—if wildlife viewing is part of your plan. The vibrant flora is also part of what makes the trail feel alive; depending on the time of year, you’ll notice different colors and textures along the path.

Getting there, parking, and starting your hike

Access is straightforward. Sentier Du Moulin is located a short drive from downtown Quebec City, which makes it easy to visit even if you’re staying in the city and only have part of a day to spare. This close-to-town location also makes it a convenient option for travelers who want a reliable outdoor plan without committing to a long journey.

At the trailhead, you’ll find ample parking, which helps take the pressure off arrival timing. Clear signage supports a smoother start, too—use it to orient yourself with the trail network and decide on a route that fits your group’s energy level and the time you have.

Other activities and seasonal use

While hiking is a main reason to come, Sentier Du Moulin isn’t limited to foot travel. The same trail network also offers mountain biking options, which can change the feel of the experience from a slower-paced nature outing to something more active and speed-focused.

In winter, the area becomes a cross-country skiing destination. That year-round versatility is useful for locals and visitors alike: you can return in a different season and get a fresh experience of the same forest and terrain, with winter conditions turning familiar corridors into a quieter, snow-covered route system.

What to bring and how to prepare

Plan your day around the weather. Before you go, check conditions and dress for what you’ll actually be walking into—forest trails can feel cooler and damper than the city, especially near streams. Comfortable footwear is a must so you can stay focused on the scenery instead of hot spots or sore feet.

Carry water and snacks even if you’re planning a shorter visit. Having something to drink and a quick bite makes it easier to take advantage of the viewpoints and enjoy a relaxed break when you find a spot you like. If you’re bringing a camera, keep it handy—between the forest, the streams, and the broader views over the landscape, you’ll likely want it more than once.

Who this hike is good for

Sentier Du Moulin works well whether you’re looking for solitude or planning a day outdoors with friends or family. The trail network format helps groups spread out naturally without feeling locked into one route, and the range of trail options makes it easier to match the day to the people you’re with.

If your goal is a practical, scenic outdoor outing near Quebec City—something that feels like a real nature break, with forests, streams, wildlife, and viewpoints—this trail system fits the bill without making the day complicated.

I have ridden my bike at many places around North America and would put SDM up there with any of them. The trail network is fantastic, making excellent use of the terrain around Saint-Raymond. The staff were great, food was delicious, and after ride beer on the patio was perfect. The hour drive southwest from Quebec City is completely worth it for this level of trail quality and service. This place sets the standard for what a mountain bike destination should be.

The trails are superb. The Maelstrom trails were especially great! Loved QMG as well. Big thumbs up to the trail builders who've created something special in Saint-Raymond. The 200m elevation gain provides excellent flow and technical variety. Hard to choose between SDM and VBN when I go to Quebec - both offer world-class riding that justifies the drive from Quebec City. The trail construction quality really shows in the ride experience.

Winter is awesome at Sentier du Moulin. I've waited a while before posting this review. I visited these trails five times in the past two weeks. It is fantastic. The staff are extremely friendly and very helpful. There is a pro shop that is able to get your bike up and running with a small repair almost immediately. The logical comparison is to contrast riding at this location with riding on the west coast of Canada. The Sentiers Du Moulin trails are comparable to those found in the Alice Lake area of Squamish British Columbia. The trails are very well maintained. The trails are smooth when they're supposed to be smooth and gnarly when they're supposed to be gnarly. There is a gathering point at the top which is a large patio deck and after the climb up most riders will stop and have some chit chat at this point. There is enough variety to keep a person interested for months on end. I plan on returning many times over. It is a true destination for mountain biking.

It's pretty good if you're into new school riding, boring fire road style climbs with descents peppered with cool features here and there. If you like old school natural techy xc stuff it has some nice trails that nobody seems to ride. Strong enduro bro vibe with red bull inflatables and patio dj, yet no place to wash your bike?!? Also expensive at 20$! I paid full price but the whole new section was closed and a good part of the older section was closed due to construction, nobody mentioned this before I paid. The hour drive from Quebec City should guarantee better trail access. For the new school types of trails I'd rather pay more and get shuttled or a chairlift but there's loads of people so I guess this is what today's riders want.

We went there on a sunday. Even though there were a lot of cars in the parking lot, the trails didn't feel crowded at all. Fun trails with slopes that make great use of the 200m elevation gain. The trail network at Saint-Raymond spreads riders out well across different difficulty levels. Despite the paid parking, the experience was worth it for a solid day of riding with varied terrain that keeps things interesting.
