The trail is 1.5 kilometers long with only 30 meters of elevation gain, making it an easy hike suitable for families, beginners, and hikers of all fitness levels. The estimated completion time is 45 minutes, though most visitors spend longer enjoying the formations.
Le Sentier des Ocres is located in Roussillon, a village in the Vaucluse department of Provence, within the Parc Naturel Régional du Luberon. It is approximately 50 kilometers from Avignon and 10 kilometers from Apt.
Wear closed-toe hiking boots or shoes with good traction and avoid light-colored clothing as ochre dust stains easily. Bring a brush and plastic bag for camera equipment, as fine ochre dust penetrates zippers and gear. Arrive early as the paid parking lot fills quickly.
Early morning and late afternoon offer the most intense colors and best lighting for photography. In summer, these times are also more comfortable as the ochre absorbs and radiates significant heat. The trail can become slippery when wet, so avoid visits immediately after rain.
Le Sentier des Ocres winds through a former ochre quarry, showcasing dramatic geological formations in vibrant colors ranging from pale cream to deep crimson. The trail follows historic mining routes and reveals millions of years of geological history through visible color bands in the rock.
