My Summer Hiking Story: Discovering 5 Exceptional Quebec Trails That Transformed My Adventures

Summer 2024 will remain etched in my memory. Not just because I hiked more kilometers than ever before, but especially because I rediscovered why I fell in love with hiking fifteen years ago. Between breathtaking sunrises and moments when I doubted my abilities, my summer of hiking in Quebec reminded me that every trail tells a unique story. Five of them particularly marked me, each for different reasons. Let me tell you about these adventures that defined my season — maybe they'll inspire your next escapades.

🏔️ The Challenge That Made Me Doubt: Mont du Lac des Cygnes

I started the season strong with Mont du Lac des Cygnes in Charlevoix. You know those hikes where you tell yourself "this'll be chill" and quickly realize you've royally screwed up?

From the first kilometers, the trail made it clear there was no messing around. The climb is constant, even merciless. My legs started burning earlier than expected, and I had to stop more often than I wanted to admit.

⚠️ Warning — This trail is deceptive at the start. The slope looks gentle on the map, but it never lets up. Bring more water than usual and accept taking your time.

But when I reached the summit... wow. The panorama over Charlevoix and the Saint Lawrence River reminded me why I accept suffering a bit for these moments. I spent a good half hour up there, just absorbing the view and telling myself how lucky I was to live in Quebec.

This hike taught me humility right from the start of the season. Sometimes, even after all these years, a trail can still surprise you.

🌲 The Perfect Family Discovery: Parc Michel Chartrand

In July, I took my 8-year-old niece hiking for the first time. I needed a safe place, not too demanding, but interesting enough to hook her. Parc Michel Chartrand turned out to be the perfect choice.

What struck me was how well this park makes you forget you're in the Montreal suburbs. The trails wind through a beautiful mature forest, with enough variety to maintain a child's attention.

My niece was fascinated by everything: the squirrels, the different tree species, even the little bridges along the route. She asked me a thousand questions, and I rediscovered the pleasure of observing nature through fresh eyes.

💡 Pro tip — To introduce a child to hiking, choose a park with facilities (toilets, water points) and plan "missions": find 5 different types of leaves, spot animal tracks, etc.

This outing reminded me that hiking isn't just about performance or personal challenges. It's also about sharing your passion and passing on the love of the outdoors to the next generation.

🍂 Flaming Autumn: Mont Yamaska

Early October, the fall colors were at their peak. I was craving a Quebec classic, so I headed to Mont Yamaska. And boy, did I nail the timing!

The main trail was literally carpeted with multicolored leaves. Every turn revealed a new tableau: blood-red maples, bright yellow birches, bronze oaks. I probably took more photos that day than during the entire rest of summer.

The climb to the observation tower was more demanding than I remembered, but the effort was worth it. From the top of the tower, the panorama over Montérégie in autumn dress was breathtaking. I crossed paths with a dozen other hikers, all with the same blissful smile in front of such beauty.

"Autumn in Quebec is like nature deciding to put on its grand show before winter. And we have front row seats."

This hike confirmed why autumn remains my favorite season for exploring our trails. The cool temperature, the explosive colors, the pure air... everything's there for magical moments.

📌 Good to know — Fall colors typically peak between late September and mid-October in Quebec. Check color reports before planning your outing to maximize the spectacle.

⛰️ The Adventure That Tested My Limits: Hautes-Gorges de la Malbaie

If I had to choose THE hike that marked me most this summer, it would hands down be the one at Parc national des Hautes-Gorges de la rivière Malbaie. I had decided to tackle the Acropole des Draveurs, and let's say I got a lesson in humility.

The beginning of the trail was promising: a nice walk through the forest along the river. But when the real climb started... holy smokes that's steep! I quickly understood why this trail has a reputation as a calf killer.

Halfway through, I seriously thought about turning back. My legs were shaking, my breath was short, and I was starting to doubt my fitness. But you know what? It's exactly in these moments that we discover what we're capable of.

⚠️ Warning — The Acropole des Draveurs is no joke. Bring lots of water, energy snacks, and don't hesitate to take breaks. Pride can be healed; exhaustion is more complicated.

When I finally reached the lookout... I cried. No shame in admitting it. The view of the deep gorges, the Malbaie River winding below, the mountains stretching as far as the eye could see... it was stunningly beautiful.

This hike reminded me that our greatest rewards often come after our greatest efforts. It will remain etched in my memory as a moment when I pushed my limits and discovered one of Quebec's most beautiful panoramas.

🌅 The Perfect Finale: Canyon Sainte-Anne

To close my season beautifully, I chose Canyon Sainte-Anne. Not the most demanding hike of the summer, but certainly one of the most spectacular.

What makes this place unique is the combination of impressive falls and walkways that let you get really close to the action. The sound of cascading water, the rising mist, the smell of the humid forest... all your senses are engaged.

I took my time that day. Instead of rushing to the next viewpoint, I savored every moment. I observed the play of light on the water, listened to birdsong between the waterfall's roar, felt the coolness of the mist on my face.

💡 Pro tip — Visit Canyon Sainte-Anne in late afternoon to enjoy the golden light on the falls. And bring a light raincoat: you'll get sprayed near the cascades!

This last hike of the season was perfect for taking stock. No extreme physical challenge, just the pure beauty of Quebec nature in all its splendor.

🎒 Lessons from This Unforgettable Summer

Each of these five hikes taught me something different. Mont du Lac des Cygnes reminded me of the importance of staying humble before the mountain. Parc Michel Chartrand showed me the joy of sharing my passion. Mont Yamaska offered an incomparable natural spectacle. The Hautes-Gorges pushed me to my limits. And Canyon Sainte-Anne allowed me to savor the simple beauty of our landscapes.

What struck me most was realizing how Quebec overflows with natural treasures. No need to go to the other side of the world to experience memorable adventures. Our local trails offer incredible diversity: from technical challenges to family walks, from alpine panoramas to spectacular waterfalls.

I also understood the importance of varying experiences. Alternating between solo hikes and group outings, between physical challenges and peaceful discoveries, between new territories and revisited classics. This diversity enriches our practice and helps us grow as hikers.

📌 Good to know — Keeping a hiking journal (even a simple one) helps better appreciate your progress and keep precise memories of your adventures. A photo and a few notes are enough!

Finally, this summer confirmed that hiking is much more than a physical activity. It's a way to connect with nature, to surpass yourself, to share special moments with loved ones, and to discover the beauty that surrounds us.
