Trail description

The trails

The City of Kitchener lists over 7 km of trails in the natural area. According to the Ontario Hiking guide (an unofficial source; names confirmed by OpenStreetMap), six trails cross there:

  • Huron Trail: 1.3 km, loop; the paved sections are wheelchair accessible.
  • Meadow Trail: 0.6 km, loop; it connects several trails including the Woodland and Strasburg Creek.
  • Woodland Trail: 0.8 km, loop; dirt trail with slightly uneven terrain through a younger mixed forest.
  • Forest Trail: 1 km, loop; passes the Board of Education Pond, with a boardwalk on its southern edge.
  • Plantation Trail: 1.7 km; stone surface along the forest edge, it links back to the Huron Trail and the parking lot.
  • Strasburg Creek Trail: 2 km; the only one that does not form a loop.

The Huron Trail is the trail chosen as this page's main route: a 1.3 km loop within reach of the parking lot. One loop takes 20 to 30 minutes; to combine several trails, allow about two hours.

What you will find

The area combines forest and wetland, a natural playground, hiking trails and lookout areas. It shows evidence of Indigenous settlement dating back hundreds of years. The City runs programs and events year-round with partners, including family activities from the Kitchener Natural Areas Program, and is developing a 10-year stewardship and ecological restoration plan with community input, including local Indigenous communities.

Access and parking

The main entrance and free parking are at 801 Trillium Drive. Trail access is also available from Parkvale Drive. The Strasburg Road access is closed because of nearby construction, with no reopening date given. Grand River Transit route 26 stops at the Trillium Drive entrance. Accessible men's and women's washrooms are on site.

Rules

Stay on the trails, keep your dog on a leash, pick up after it and do not remove plants or animals. The area cannot be rented for weddings, parties or other large private events. Opening hours are not published by the City.

Precautions

According to the Ontario Hiking guide, biting insects can be present depending on the season, and ticks are a concern on Ontario trails in general. Tree markings are sparse, but signposts and maps appear along the routes.
