Trail description

Description

Parc De La Rivière Du Moulin is a quiet, easy-to-reach nature space in the Saguenay - Lac-Saint-Jean region, conveniently close to the city of Saguenay. It’s the kind of park that works just as well for a simple hour outside as it does for a longer day of wandering—especially if you like being near water and prefer trails that feel immersed in forest rather than wide, exposed paths.

At its core, this park is built around the Rivière du Moulin. As you walk, you’ll keep coming back to the river’s presence—sometimes right alongside it, sometimes hearing it through the trees—so the scenery changes without ever feeling like you’ve left the same natural setting. It’s a solid choice if you want a straightforward outdoor outing with frequent “stop and look” moments instead of a single big viewpoint at the end.

Trails and hiking experience

Parc De La Rivière Du Moulin offers an extensive network of trails for all levels of hikers, from a casual stroll to something that feels more like a real hike. Because it’s a network, you can tailor the day: keep things short and relaxed, or link trails together for a longer loop-style outing that still feels close to the river and forest. If you’re visiting with mixed abilities in your group, this flexibility is one of the most useful parts of the park.

Across the park, the overall character of the walking is forest-focused, with trails winding through lush woods and running along the picturesque Rivière du Moulin. Expect a steady rhythm of wooded sections and river-adjacent stretches. The river is the star feature here—your views tend to be layered: trees framing the water, small openings that give you clearer sightlines, and frequent changes in angle as the trail curves and follows the landscape.

If you’re planning for distance, the trail network adds up to 36.1 km in total, with about 100 m of elevation gain across the system. The overall difficulty is described as easy, making this a good park for beginners, families who want a low-stress outing, or anyone looking for a gentler day outside without committing to steep climbs. The easy rating also makes it a practical choice if you’d rather focus on wildlife watching, photography, or simply covering ground at an unhurried pace.

What you’ll see along the way

This park stands out for the way it keeps you connected to natural scenery throughout the walk. The combination of forest and water means there’s always something to look at even on a simple route: textured greenery, the movement and sound of the river, and shifting light through the trees. The trails are described as offering breathtaking views at every turn, which in practice usually means lots of smaller scenic moments rather than one single highlight—perfect if you like frequent photo stops or short breaks to take in the surroundings.

Because you’re moving through a lush forest environment, the experience is also very seasonal. In autumn, the park is known for vibrant foliage, and the river makes a great contrast to the changing colors. In winter, the same landscape becomes quieter and more open-feeling in places, with a tranquil snow-covered setting that changes the mood completely. If you enjoy revisiting the same place across the year, this is the kind of park that feels different each time without needing a big change in route.

Wildlife and nature watching

Parc De La Rivière Du Moulin is home to diverse flora and fauna, which makes it especially rewarding if you like to slow down and pay attention. As you explore the serene surroundings, keep an eye out for local wildlife such as deer and a variety of bird species. The best approach here is to build in time for quiet walking: pause near the river, listen for calls from the trees, and scan the edges of the trail where animals are most likely to appear.

Even if you don’t spot deer on your visit, the birdlife and plant diversity tend to give you a sense of being in an active ecosystem rather than just “a trail through the woods.” If you’re bringing kids or first-time hikers, wildlife watching is an easy way to keep the walk engaging without needing a long distance goal.

Other activities throughout the year

Hiking is the main draw, but the park offers other ways to spend time outdoors depending on the season. In warmer months, you can make use of picnic areas—a practical option if you want to turn a walk into a half-day outing. One simple plan is to do a shorter hike first, then settle in for a meal surrounded by forest and river scenery, especially if you’re visiting with a group that includes both hikers and non-hikers.

In winter, the park shifts into a different kind of playground. It becomes a winter wonderland with opportunities for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. If you’re used to hiking in summer, winter visits here can feel like a new park: the snow-covered landscape adds a calm, muted atmosphere, and the same trail network gives you options whether you want something gentle or a longer ski or snowshoe session.

Access and trip planning

With its location near Saguenay, Parc De La Rivière Du Moulin works well for a day trip, but it’s also easy to return to multiple times if you live in the area or are staying nearby. The park is described as conveniently accessible, so it’s a good choice when you want nature without a complicated drive or a full-day travel commitment.

The park is open year-round, which makes planning straightforward: you can visit in the warmer seasons for hiking and picnics, then come back in winter for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Since the terrain is easy overall and the experience is built around forest and river scenery, it’s a reliable option when you want an outdoor plan that doesn’t depend on chasing a single viewpoint or timing a specific short-lived feature.

Lovely place for the kids to play. There is a younger kid section and an older kid one. There is also a big sand play area so bring your sand toys. The wifi connection is great and the toilets are always clean. Staff is helpful and polite.

Kids and I loved the walk. The trails are wide and well-kept. The kids played at the park for a long time after we finished the trail. We really had a wonderful time.

Lovely local park. The river is beautiful and the nature is gorgeous here. Negative points: parents letting their children run around and scream and some people are trying to enjoy the peace and nature and maybe listen to a few birds. Children ruined that very quickly. Also it’s not possible to bike at 10km an hour maximum. Most people run or job that fast
