Trail description
Description
Sitting right at the edge of downtown Magog, the Parcs de la Baie-de-Magog et de la pointe Merry offer one of the most rewarding easy walks in the Eastern Townships. The 5.5-kilometer trail network hugs the shoreline of Lake Memphremagog, keeping the water in view for much of the route while staying almost entirely flat — just 10 meters of elevation gain across the whole loop. Plan on about an hour and a half at a comfortable pace, though it's easy to linger longer.
What makes this spot genuinely special is the setting. Lake Memphremagog is one of Quebec's most striking lakes, stretching south across the Canada-US border, and the trails here put you right at its edge. Depending on the time of day and the weather, the lake can look completely different — glassy and mirror-calm in the early morning, choppy and steel-grey under an overcast sky, or lit up in deep orange and pink at sunset. You're not just walking past the lake; you're walking with it.
What the Trail Is Like
The terrain shifts between wooded sections and open lakefront areas, which keeps the walk from feeling monotonous. In the forested stretches, mature trees close in overhead and the path feels quieter and more sheltered. These sections offer a real sense of being in nature even though you're a short walk from town. Then the trail opens back up onto the shore, and suddenly you've got wide, unobstructed views across the water and toward the hills on the far side of the lake.
The path surface is well-maintained and generally smooth throughout, so regular hiking shoes or even sturdy sneakers are perfectly adequate. The minimal elevation change means there's nothing technically demanding here — no scrambling, no steep descents, no tricky footing. That's not a knock on the trail; it's genuinely what makes it work for such a wide range of people.
Families with young kids, older hikers, and anyone coming off an injury or just looking for a relaxed outing will all feel at home here. At the same time, more experienced hikers who want a scenic recovery day or an easy social walk with less experienced friends will find it just as worthwhile.
Picnic Areas and Facilities
Picnic areas are scattered through the parks in spots that take full advantage of the lake views. These aren't afterthoughts tucked into corners — they're positioned where you actually want to stop and sit. Bringing lunch and spending a few hours here is a completely natural way to use the parks, and plenty of visitors do exactly that. The combination of easy walking and good spots to rest makes this a destination that works for a quick outing or a relaxed half-day outdoors.
Parking and access are straightforward given the parks' location near the center of Magog. After your walk, the town's cafes, restaurants, and shops are within easy reach, which makes it simple to turn a morning hike into a full day out.
Beyond Hiking
The parks aren't just a hiking destination. During warmer months, cycling paths run through the same area, following routes with the same lake views. The proximity to Lake Memphremagog also opens up water-based activities, so it's possible to experience the lake from both the trail and the water on the same visit.
In winter, the parks shift character entirely. The same flat, accessible terrain that makes summer hiking easy translates well to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Snow-covered trails along a partially frozen Lake Memphremagog create a completely different atmosphere — quieter, starker, and in its own way just as beautiful. The gentle grades keep winter activities accessible to a wide range of skill levels, which mirrors the summer experience well.
Photography and Wildlife
The mix of forest, open meadow, and lakefront habitat creates genuinely varied photography opportunities. Early morning and late afternoon light on the lake are the most dynamic, but the lake's size means conditions can shift quickly and produce unexpected results at almost any hour. The diverse habitats also support a range of bird species and small mammals typical of the Eastern Townships, though wildlife sightings tend to be a pleasant bonus rather than something to plan around.
Whether you're here for a quick walk, a family picnic, or a slow morning with a camera, the Parcs de la Baie-de-Magog et de la pointe Merry deliver a genuinely enjoyable outdoor experience that's hard to match for accessibility and scenery in this part of Quebec.
